Mariarosa Guglielmi
About
Mariarosa Guglielmi is an internationally recognized Specialized Master Trainer (SMT) in both the GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® methods, with a professional journey rooted in dance, movement exploration, teaching and artistic research.
Growing up in Italy, she loved to move and dance from an early age. At 18, she moved abroad to pursue her dance education, studying at institutions including the London Contemporary Dance School, Alvin Ailey American Dance Center and the Trisha Brown School. In 1991, in New York City, she met Juliu Horvath. That meeting with a mentor marked the beginning of a profound and lifelong exploration into the art of exercising and movement expression.
At White Cloud Studios, then the home of what would become known as the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®, she began teaching the method and working closely with Juliu Horvath. Over the following decades, she worked as one of his presenters, contributed to educational videos, traveled internationally and shared the GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® approaches with teachers and students around the world.
The experience of learning directly from Juliu, observing his process and being part of the environment in which his work was being transmitted became a profound and formative part of her professional journey. The years of close collaboration, exploration and exchange continue to inform her understanding and teaching of the GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® methods today.
Alongside this journey, her artistic life in New York continued to unfold. As a dancer, she performed and choreographed with Rituals, a New York-based dance company founded by Nathan Trice, and was later invited to dance with Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Her ongoing curiosity about movement also led her to Butoh, where she studied and performed with Maureen Fleming. She presented her own work at a variety of New York venues and has always found particular joy in the practice of dance composition.
In 2016, her continuing dialogue between dance and the GYROKINESIS® method led her to create An Exotic GYROKINESIS® Journey at the Ballet Barre, a specialized continuing education course for certified GYROKINESIS® Trainers. The course explores the relationship between the GYROKINESIS® work and the possibilities that a simple instrument such as the ballet barre can bring to the practice, while also using specially designed straps to facilitate an entire GYROKINESIS® warm-up format.
The ballet barre in this course is not used in the conventional way, and no ballet training is required. Rather, the barre becomes a framework for exploring movement, support, articulation, coordination and spatial awareness through the GYROKINESIS® approach.
A year later, following a long-standing curiosity about the Gaga movement language, she participated in a Gaga One Year Program with Ohad Naharin and a team of teachers. Her experience with the Gaga approach opened another dimension of movement research and further expanded her exploration of sensation, perception and the body's potential.
Today, she shares the offerings that are part of the GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® teacher-training curriculum, alongside her specialized continuing education work. She offers in-person and online classes, teacher-training courses and retreats internationally.
Her work continues to be shaped by the teachers, artists, colleagues, students, friends and places that have contributed to her journey. Above all, she remains deeply grateful for the artistic and multicultural community that has accompanied her throughout the years, and for the opportunity to continue exploring and sharing the magic of movement.
Alongside her work in movement and teaching, she enjoys sculpting, painting and singing, and shares her life with her family and their pet under the enduring spell of “Let’s dance.”
